DIY Autumn Potpourri

Nothing beats the scent of Autumn.. the spices, the fruit.. and with this Instant Pot Autumn Potpourri, your home will be filled with the warmth of sugar and spice, without using toxic fragrance!

It is becoming widely acceptable now that store bought air fresheners and scented candles can be damaging to your family's health. When there are so many natural alternatives, why would you take the risk?  By making your own Instant Pot Potpourri, you can control exactly what ingredients you use and you can also have fun making it!

What is Instant Pot Potpourri?

In a nutshell.. Instant Pot Potpourri is a safe, natural alternative to synthetic air fresheners and scented candles. You may have also heard people call it a simmering pot. Traditionally, these fresh potpourris were made on the stove, so you can do that too if you don't have an Instant Pot. We simply add dried herbs, fruit or essential oils to a jar, then add all ingredients to water in the pot when you are ready to use. As the water simmers, your home will smell amazing.

How to Prepare Autumn Potpourri Step by Step

Whether you choose the traditional stove top method or your Instant Pot, here is how to get started:

1. Gather all your ingredients, spices, fruit etc. You'll also need two 32 ounce Mason jars. (approx 1L each)

2. Slice 1 apple and 1 orange 1/2 cm thick

3. Add 1 tsp of nutmeg, 2 cinnamon sticks, 1/2 tbl of cloves and half of the fruit to each jar.

4. Add 2 cups of water and 2 tbl vanilla to each jar and put on the lid. Store in the fridge until you are ready to use.

How to Heat Up Your Autumn Potpourri

Add contents of the jar to your Instant Pot and set to sauté mode. Once the water is boiling, simply set your Instant Pot on warm and leave the lid off to enjoy the beautiful aroma. Add water as needed.

If using a stove top and saucepan, simply reduce to a simmer once the pot boils and add more water as needed.

Some of My Favourite Variations

For Spring or Summer you could try herbs like mint, ginger, lemon and thyme or for Winter, rosemary, eucalyptus, clove and anise.

Want Something Even More Simple?

Try a diffuser with some essential oils. This is by far the most simple and cost effective way to scent your home naturally. There are so many fun recipes to try and you can pop it on all day, everyday without having to keep an eye on it.

Best Tips for Instant Pot Autumn Potpourri

* Make sure to remove the lid on your pot so that the amazing aroma can fill your home
* Check the water level in your pot and add more if you need to
* After a few days you will need to replace the fruit and spices

Let me know if you try this! I'd love to hear from you.
